Formerly of the band Cinderella, musician Tom Keifer has overcome a lot including addiction and severe vocal cord injuries, but is still rocking out today with his current project “The Tom Keifer Band.” In his teen years Tom briefly battled addiction but was able to pull himself up by his bootstraps and break free of his demons. Early on he made a conscious decision to focus on making music and more positive things than using drugs, and has never looked back to those dark days. This empowered him to work hard on the art he was so passionate about and not fall into the forthcoming traps of rock stardom. Not being a big fan of academics, Keifer needed just a little coaxing from his wise and persuasive Mother, who bribed him with the Gibson Les Paul he had so coveted. Her plan worked like a charm, and Tom earned his High School Diploma and guitar that would later take him to his place in Rock & Roll history.
When asked about his musical influences Tom credits his love for the type of rock he grew up on, which included elements of soul, blues and gospel. Due to his success in the industry, Tom was able to meet and even perform with some of his idols including Little Richard, who he recalls as being the first and maybe only artist he had ever asked for an autograph. Keifer also met and had tea with Jimmy Page which he says “was a huge moment, and a big deal” to him, Keith Richards “who is amazing”, and Johnny Winter “a hero to me”, and was able to perform with a band that he always loved growing up, Cheap Trick. As far as people in the bizz that have helped him over the years, Gene Simmons and Jon Bon Jovi top the list, both having pushed hard to get Cinderella signed to Mercury Records, which eventually did happen.
DC – “You’ve had a long career, how are you feeling?
TK – “I am appreciative and grateful to still be doing what I love to do”
DC – “Does it ever get old?
TK – “Writing and Producing is still fun, but [performing] live has always been my favorite part of what I do.”
When speaking of his current line-up Tom says forming the new touring band was surprisingly “effortless,” and the band has great chemistry which shows when witnessing their shows, and extreme talent, as all 7 members sing, including his wife Savannah who also plays piano and percussion. The other 5 members include Tony Higbee – Guitar, Billy Mercer – Bass, Kendra Chantelle – Percussion, Jarred Pope – Drums, & Kory Myers – Keyboard.
The group will be making its first appearance at The Cave located in Big Bear Lake, CA, but Tom has heard of the beauty and is looking forward to playing “a great room” like The Cave. You can expect all the classic hits, new music, as well as some surprise covers according to Keifer, and when I asked if he had anything more to say to the fans he said “If you are anywhere near Big Bear, come see us at The Cave, It’s gonna be a big, loud, rock & roll show.”
